Wow Bao, a chain restaurant serving Asian-American cuisine, is now available in the Owensboro area through third-party delivery or pick-up orders. The Chicago-based restaurant has set up a “ghost kitchen” as Wow Bao’s food is prepared and distributed by Fazoli’s staff from their stationary location.

According to an article published by Restaurant Hospitality, Wow Bao sells its products to other restaurants and ghost kitchen companies for resale as secondary income.

“In an unprecedented move in the industry, Wow Bao has begun selling the materials needed to make a simplified version of the menu with bowls, buns and pot stickers to other restaurants and ghost kitchens,” the article explains. “For $ 2,000, the company will send participating restaurants or kitchens a starter kit with onboarding and training materials, as well as the three kitchen gadgets needed to steam, cook and sell the Wow Bao menu from their kitchen through third party delivery Companies like Caviar, DoorDash, GrubHub, Postmates, and Uber Eats. ”

Jamie Maurer, Fazoli’s assistant manager, said business at the Owensboro location has been booming since the restaurant partnered with Wow Bao to make and sell certain menu items.

In a week the cooks were so busy with Wow Bao orders that Fazoli was forced to keep one person on the steamer at all times.

“There weren’t many orders in the first few days. After 2-3 days it blew up, ”said Maurer. “During our lunch break, we have Wow Bao orders valued at $ 500 to $ 600.”

Fazoli’s keeps the Wow Bao kitchen in the “back of house,” added Maurer, with one person preparing and cooking orders all the time while the rest of the staff work on Fazoli’s orders.

Although it kept staff busy, Maurer said the partnership between Wow Bao and Fazoli has been a good thing for both companies. Fazoli’s restaurants in other locations have brought home $ 3,000 a week due to Wow Bao orders, she said.

“It’s a whole new world,” said Maurer of the ghost kitchen experience. “I didn’t even know people did that until we did.”

Fazoli’s now also serves a variety of grand pianos via Wingville, which is attached to the restaurant.

Wow Bao orders can be made through GrubHub or DoorDash.
