These startups make moving to a new NYC apartment less hellish
Finding and moving into your next apartment in New York City doesn’t have to trigger a full blown panic attack.
Sure, hopping from one living space to another is impractical, inefficient, and can cost a lot of money.
But there is hope – and part of it comes in part from a handful of new companies that moved like Uber in the taxi hail. These startups are ready to help with seamless and affordable transitions on the go.
Here are five direct-to-consumer companies that make it a little easier to find, secure, and even set up your next home.
Find an apartment and don’t pay a fee

Loftey acts like a knowledgeable realtor helping tenants find new apartments – but for free. Contractors and management companies give Loftey, founded in 2015, a cut, according to CEO Ori Goldman, when a customer he refers to signs a lease.
At Loftey, Christian Keenum, a 28-year-old customer solutions manager on Facebook, found his current apartment, a two-bedroom apartment in a Chelsea skyscraper with a doorman, gym and sundeck. “I sent Loftey a list of 10+ apartments that I found on various websites and they responded almost immediately with advice and feedback, which saved us time and headaches in our search,” says Keenum.
Loftey can also urge landlords and managers to reduce rent for their clients – up to $ 25 to $ 200 a month. In some cases, however, Goldman adds, “Loftey will literally write you a check.”

The flex rental market is booming: Several companies – including Zeus, Blueground, and Landing – have touted short-term furnished units aimed at people with shaky appointments or business travelers on longer stays.
The turnkey living spaces, often with hotel-like services or amenities, are available for more than a few days but less than a year. A furnished studio in Murray Hill, secured by Zeus, became the home base for Genevieve Brown, 32, her husband, and two cats for a month after vacating an apartment in Harlem and moving into a purchased cooperative in Chelsea. Brown said they picked the studio, which had kitchenware, linens, and towels, and was around $ 3,000 for convenient commuting.
“One consolation I found was that it felt more like an apartment than a hotel,” she adds.
Landing has on-demand concierge apartments ready to move into in cities across the United States such as NYC, Nashville, Tennessee, and Austin, Texas. Alex Chatzieleftheriou started Blueground, now in 12 cities, to “find an apartment in a great neighborhood, book it that day and move in tomorrow”.

Rhino was launched in 2017 and replaces cash collateral with affordable insurance. The program is free for builders or management companies.
Rhino charges tenants a modest monthly fee proportional to their rent or the value of the cash deposit and can go up to $ 5 per month for a room rented for $ 1,000. “Housing affordability is an issue that affects New Yorkers and Americans in all economic circumstances,” said Jordan Stein, public policy director for the brand.

“Kaiyo. . . makes it easier than Craigslist to furnish or update your space, ”adds Keberle, who is particularly proud of the Gerrit Rietveld Red Blue Chair that she achieved.
Found a new place – but the dining table doesn’t fit?
