Place same-day delivery, pickup orders
Getting last-minute gifts to loved ones without setting foot in the shops is easier than it has been in years.
With the online shopping boom sparked by the pandemic, retailers are setting tight deadlines to guarantee delivery while on vacation. However, they also offer same day options, from delivery to roadside collection.
This good news has a downside in some cases. You may have to pay extra to receive your late orders on Christmas Eve.
“As many customers are now discovering, all of this increasing e-commerce has weighed on traditional mail order companies. USPS is struggling with backlogs and delays, ”said Marc Gorlin, founder and CEO of Roadie, a crowdsourced delivery platform for same-day and urgent shipments. “More than ever, many shoppers will be counting on same-day or urgent delivery for their vacation needs.”

Same day delivery has become more than a convenience: it’s an essential service, Evangeline George, director of business communications at Shipt, told USA TODAY.
“At the beginning of 2020, our goal was to view same-day delivery not as a luxury but as a convenience. What we saw is that American consumers and retailers have embraced it, “said George, adding that Shipt delivers deliveries from more than 120 retailers including Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Buybuy Baby, Best Buy, Party City , CVS, Office Depot, Petco and Meijer.
Since the beginning of December, more than 3.5 million parcels across the country have been delayed by one or more days. This comes from a study by shipping consultancy ShipMatrix, which used industry data from over 100,000 shipping locations across the country.
Matthew Lekstutis, global managing partner of Supply Chain Consulting at Tata Consultancy Services, said what made this year tougher: “Many of us are more likely to exchange gifts through parcel post than in person at traditional large gatherings, which further emphasizes the logistics providers that are their own own challenges in employee safety in this enormous upswing. “
Instacart President Nilam Ganenthiran told the US TODAY that demand for same day delivery services as Instacart has increased as people have “made lifestyle changes to protect themselves and their families”.
“With the holidays in full swing and shipping delays rampant, more and more people are turning to Instacart to put food on the table and now to send last-minute gifts to loved ones,” Ganenthiran said.
Instacart supplies the Disney Store, Sephora, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Big Lots, Staples, 7-Eleven and partners with more than 500 national, regional and local retailers.
The COVID-19 crisis has created an expansion – and reliance – on what Amazon started with the recent surge in demand for same-day delivery, Gorlin says.
Roadie has added 5,000 stores to its retail space, which currently spans more than 15,000 locations nationwide and includes a thousand Home Depot, all Tractor Supply stores and most recently Chico’s, he said.
“We can’t always forecast demand – but the crowdsourcing model is successful because it doesn’t have to. We can add delivery resources in real time, “said Gorlin.” As the delivery volume increases, so does the number of active drivers delivering within our system, while delivery times and costs remain the same. “
Place orders early on the same day
When ordering on Christmas Eve, experts advise consumers to place orders early in the day and realize that delivery times may depend on the availability of the store’s staff and paid buyers who round up the orders.
On-demand restaurant delivery services, including DoorDash and Postmates, also deliver to retailers.
Target offers same day Christmas Eve delivery via Shipt for orders placed through the Target app or website by 5:00 p.m. Thursday. However, delivery times vary, so an early order is recommended. Amazon also has same day delivery on Christmas Eve.
Walmart’s closing date for orders for delivery and collection on Christmas Eve is Wednesday, subject to availability. However, there is an express delivery option that can be ordered by 1:00 p.m. Thursday to deliver in two hours or less. Orders must be at least $ 35.
Consumers who are ready to collect their orders in stores or on the roadside can often benefit from savings. JC Penney is offering an additional 10% off select same day pickup items. Orders can be placed until 3 p.m. local time on Christmas Eve.
Belk is offering an additional 5% discount on pick-up orders and one person per day in each store until Thursday using a pick-up option will receive the value of their order back in the store. Gift cards up to $ 575 in a promotion called “Very Merry Surprise”.
Walgreens, which ships same-day with both Postmates and DoorDash, recently added pick-up for online roadside, pharmacy and in-store orders in just 30 minutes. Until 11:59 p.m. CT Saturday, get 25% off select orders of $ 25 or more using code PICKUP25.
