Outdoor furniture made from recycled plastic raises awareness of ocean pollution

The founders of Ocean-i are making waves in Cape Town. See their pop-up product launch on Sunday at the V&A Waterfront.

With the V&A Waterfront, a local start-up is launching a campaign to raise awareness of the sea, in which breathtaking garden furniture is presented.

The products manufactured by Ocean-i are made from 100% recycled plastic.

The founders Santie Gouws and Ursula van Eck are enthusiastic divers and say that the idea came about through their love for the sea.

You are chatting with Sara-Jayne King over the weekend breakfast.

We decided to hold on and do something that will have a real impact on ocean litter.

Our range of recycled plastic furniture consists of 100% post-industrial plastic waste. It’s cut off from industrial processes, so it’s already completely clean and we know what type of plastic it is.

Our manufacturer in KwaZulu-Natal processes this and converts it into the recycled plastic version.

They explain how plastic is further incorporated into their concrete furniture using technology developed in Costa Rica that turns contaminated, mixed plastic into a raw material.

Ocean-i is also working with Maxibin to raise awareness of the risk of pollution from discarded cigarette butts.

This includes the production of clear “stompie” containers that create a visual impact at major events.

You can also process the cigarette butts that we collect in our partnership with Maxibin. Basically, they recycle them into sand, which we use to make our concrete products and our concrete containers.

Cigarette butts are by far the most polluted element in any ocean cleanup.

They describe “street furniture” as outdoor street furniture that is suitable for large outdoor landscape areas.

We promote landscape architects and new developers. It’s also for someone who just wants that special piece next to the swimming pool overlooking the ocean.

Gouws and van Eck are also the people behind Sunshine Cleaning, which works with community organizations to remove pollution from rivers and canals.

The pop-up product launch will take place on the V&A Waterfront in the space above the amphitheater, where the Christmas tree will be displayed during the Christmas season.
