On-Demand Moving App Dolly Raises $8M Series A, Expands Services To Seattle – TechCrunch

When it comes to moving that new couch you bought out of the storage room into your living room, Dolly wants you to stop kidding your friend with the truck.

Dolly is basically an Uber for furniture and other large items. The service is not intended to help you move all of your belongings to a new location. The load is as good as a few items that can be transported with a single pick-up. But when it comes to delivering a piece of furniture from an antique store, it’s one of the better options out there.

Dolly just raised a $ 8 million Series A round led by Maveron. The year-old startup has now raised nearly $ 10 million to support its mission of providing consumers with a more convenient and accessible way to get their shit moving.

The service that users set up through the company’s mobile app has some unique challenges due to the large physical size of the objects they move.

First of all, the app’s movers, known as “helpers”, don’t drive through cities looking for sofas to pick up. So if you want to schedule your dolly appointment you need to give the app some advanced scheduling. especially if your own pick-up / drop-off time slot is limited.

When it comes to pricing, Dolly CEO Michael Howell says it varies a lot depending on your specific needs.

“We ask you what you are moving, where it’s going and when you need it to get there. The “what,” “where,” and “when” give us an understanding of how difficult the job is. Then we combine that with the service level you choose, ”Howell told TechCrunch.

In addition to the standard roadside tax, you can pay a little more so that the moving company can store your items right in your house or apartment. Howell said that most users spend between $ 60 and $ 85 per transaction on the app, which he thinks is quite a bit cheaper than what they would pay to other third-party delivery services.

The app is consistently looking for ways to improve its services. Howell told me about one of their latest initiatives that allows the user to actually drive to their destination with the helper instead of having to jump for a separate Uber.

Dolly has already formed a number of key partnerships to improve his brand’s visibility in Chicago. Dolly has worked closely with Crate & Barrel as a partner to help customers have their most recent major purchases easily delivered to their homes.

Crate & Barrel’s partnership with Dolly is an expression of our commitment to innovate that provides our customers with a better customer experience, ”said Chris Kaye, Crate & Barrel’s vice president of supply chain, in a statement. “By providing Dolly, our customers have had another great customer service option to deliver products safely to their homes.”

Partnerships like this are critical as Dolly looks to expand its services outside of the Chicago market in which the company was founded. In addition to today’s Seattle launch, Howell announced that the company plans to expand to 20 major cities by the end of 2016.
