NZ’s largest furniture retailer to open, 180 jobs created

New Zealand’s largest furniture and housewares retailer Nido will open its doors to the public tomorrow.

The new $ 60 million store in West Auckland will have more than 10,000 product lines and will create 180 new jobs in the coming year.

The Henderson Store is set to take on IKEA.

Managing Director Vinod Kumar said hundreds of product containers had arrived in the months leading up to Covid-19.

“We have sourced products from New Zealand, Europe and the US and will be the largest retailer in the country. For those outside of Auckland, we will eventually offer online shopping through our website and nationwide distribution of our products.”

He said the first phase of the recruitment had been completed with an additional 90 positions due to be advertised later in the year.

The locally owned and operated store will house 80 brands that are exclusive to the store and have more than 100 showrooms.

“The size of our store is hard to understand by the time you step in, but for a clue we can accommodate a full-size three bedroom show home staged by our team of home interior designers,” said Kumar.

Once the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted, the second level of business and a cafe will open, Kumar said.

Parking spaces are available for more than 600 vehicles.

First Retail Group’s managing director Chris Wilkinson said the opening would boost retail confidence.

“People have been focusing on their home environment for the past eight weeks, and we know companies in these categories sold their essentials very well during the lockdown. These types of stores will be the first destinations Kiwifruit will visit drive as soon as we reach them. ” come out of lockdown as many of them have identified projects to start with. “

Wilkinson said companies would also look to offerings like Nido as we transition to a new way of working after Covid-19.

“We’re going to see a significant change in people’s workplaces and more of us will be working from home. So business owners need to rethink business environments and office solutions. So we expect growth here too.”

Nido was founded by civil engineer Vinod Kumar, who previously owned three Miter 10 stores and helped develop the Miter 10 mega concept store.

Nido is similar to Ikea and, like the Swedish retailer, will have a shop restaurant and a children’s play area when completed.

IKEA has confirmed that it will open a store in Auckland – but has not disclosed where or when. The store is expected to take years to build.
